Ballarat Yarrowee Freemasons Lodge No.10
Welcome
The arrival of Freemasonry in Ballarat and the Goldfields.
One of the ideals brought to the gold fields of Buninyong and Ballarat was Freemasonry. In June
1854 a number of members met in Ballarat to begin the process of forming a Masonic Lodge.
Records exist which show that on the 25th June,1854 a casual meeting was held and again on the
9th July, 1854 the second meeting was held. On the 26th November, 1854 it was decided that an
advertisement should be placed in the “Spirit of the Age” and “The Ballarat Times” requesting that
all of the Freemasons in the area should meet at 3 p.m. on the 3rd December, 1854 to complete the
necessary arrangements for the formation of a Lodge. The minutes show that only three members
arrived for the meeting at 3 p.m., for that was the day of the Eureka Affair and doubtless groups of
people would not have wanted to be seen gathering during the uproar and sedition. Finally, on the
28 September, 1855 the Lodge in Ballarat was opened. Soon four Lodges were operating in
Ballarat; they were the Victoria Lodge, the Yarrowee Lodge, the Ballarat Lodge and the United
Tradesmen’s Lodge of Ballarat East. In 1867 these four lodges amalgamated to become the
Yarrowee Lodge which still operates in Ballarat to this day.
What is Freemasonry?
Freemasonry is the oldest and largest existing fraternal organisation in the world. It comprises an
estimated 5 Million members world wide with over 13,000 in Victoria. Modern Freemasonry traces
its organization historically to the late 17th century and proudly preserves the traditions it has
inherited from those times. These traditions make Freemasonry unique within the community.
A principled way of life
Freemasonry offers men a principled way of life, a sense of belonging and of personal growth. The
principles by which a Freemason is expected to conduct himself are based on tolerance, equality,
charity and honour. Freemasons demonstrate these principles by showing tolerance and respect
for the opinions of others, behaving with kindness and understanding and practicing charity and
care for their community. Freemasons illustrate these principles for new members through
ceremonies which utilise the tools of medieval stonemasonry as symbols.
Freemasonry Universal
Freemasonry recognises the richness of all cultural beliefs and excludes no individual from
membership on the basis of race or politics. Though Freemasons are required to profess a belief in
a Supreme Being the specifics of a Freemason's belief are considered to be a personal matter.
Freemasons pursue their personal development by working towards the betterment of all
humanity through widespread community involvement. Freemasonry offers its support at all levels
from local fundraising to international relief efforts such as the Tools for Timor and Eplitiya
projects. Freemasons Victoria has been active in the community for over 170 years. It established
the Freemasons hospital in 1937 and the Royal Freemasons Homes of Victoria in 1867 for the care
of the elderly in our community.
